The United States has launched a second consecutive night of strikes on Iran, sharply escalating tensions across the Gulf as Tehran responded by targeting sites linked to US forces in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar. The latest exchange has pushed the fragile ceasefire closer to collapse and raised fresh fears of a wider regional war.

US Central Command said American forces completed an additional round of strikes against Iran on July 8, hitting approximately 90 military targets. According to CENTCOM, the targets included air defense systems, coastal surveillance assets, missile and drone storage sites, naval capabilities, and military logistics infrastructure along Iran’s coastline.

US Says Strikes Were Aimed at Protecting Shipping

Washington says the latest US strikes on Iran were designed to reduce Tehran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. CENTCOM said the operation followed an earlier night of attacks in which US forces hit approximately 80 Iranian military targets after accusing Iran of violating the ceasefire by attacking three commercial vessels moving through the strait.

The Strait of Hormuz remains the center of the crisis. It is one of the world’s most important energy routes, and any disruption there can quickly affect oil prices, shipping costs, and global markets. Reuters reported that oil markets were already reacting cautiously as traders assessed whether the latest strikes could derail talks and further threaten flows through the waterway.

Iran Retaliates Across the Gulf

Iran responded to the US strikes by targeting Gulf countries that host or support US military operations. AP reported that sirens sounded in Kuwait, while alerts were activated in Qatar and Bahrain after retaliatory Iranian fire over the Gulf. Bahrain is home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet headquarters, making the country especially sensitive in any US-Iran confrontation.

Al Jazeera reported that Iran said it had attacked “US bases and strategic centres” in Bahrain, Kuwait and Qatar after the US bombed Iranian cities for a second consecutive night. The attacks show how quickly the conflict is expanding beyond Iran’s borders and placing Gulf states directly in the line of fire.

Casualties and Damage Reported in Iran

The two days of American airstrikes have caused casualties inside Iran. AP reported that Iran’s Health Ministry said at least 14 people had been killed and 78 others wounded over two days of US attacks, with most of the dead reportedly members of the armed forces.

Iranian state media also reported explosions in several locations, including Bushehr and southern port cities. AP said state media reported a strike on a railway bridge in Iran’s northeastern Golestan province, while authorities in Iranshahr said a firefighter was killed at an airport.

Ceasefire Under Severe Pressure

The latest escalation comes after President Donald Trump said recent Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz signalled the end of the fragile ceasefire. Reuters reported that the latest exchange appeared to dim hopes of turning the June 17 memorandum of understanding into a permanent deal to end the war.

Both sides now accuse each other of violating the agreement. The US says Iran broke the ceasefire by targeting commercial vessels, while Iran argues that Washington’s strikes are a breach of commitments and an attack on its sovereignty.

Global Oil and Shipping Risks Rise

The conflict is also creating pressure on global energy and shipping markets. Reuters reported that Brent crude and US West Texas Intermediate prices moved sharply after the latest strikes, with traders watching whether shipping through the Strait of Hormuz can continue safely.

Some war insurers have advised shipping companies to pause voyages through the Strait of Hormuz or review policy terms after renewed attacks on vessels, according to Reuters. This shows that the conflict is not only a military crisis but also a global trade and energy risk.

What Happens Next?

The next 24 to 48 hours could be critical. If Iran continues to target US-linked bases in Gulf countries, Washington may respond with another round of strikes. If the US expands its campaign further inside Iran, Tehran may widen its retaliation across the region.

Diplomacy has not fully disappeared, but the space for negotiation is shrinking. Reuters reported that Trump said Iran had contacted the US and wanted to make a deal, even as the military exchange continued.

Conclusion

The second night of US strikes on Iran has pushed the region into a far more dangerous phase. With Tehran targeting bases and strategic sites in Kuwait, Bahrain, and Qatar, the conflict is no longer limited to direct US-Iran exchanges.
