Who: India vs Pakistan
What: ICC 2026 T20 World Cup
Where: R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo, Sri Lanka
When: Sunday, February 15 at 7pm (13:30 GMT)
How to follow: Full buildup begins at 9:30 GMT, followed by live text commentary.

One of the most anticipated sporting events globally will light up screens on Sunday after last-minute discussions led Pakistan to reverse its decision to boycott the T20 World Cup clash against neighbours and archrivals India.

What led to the U-turn?

Bangladesh were expelled from the tournament after refusing to play matches in India, citing security concerns. In response, Pakistan initially moved to boycott their group-stage fixture in solidarity. However, following talks with the International Cricket Council (ICC), Bangladesh and co-hosts Sri Lanka, Pakistan agreed for the match to proceed.

With political tensions temporarily set aside, attention now returns to the on-field rivalry — though pre- and post-match gestures are once again expected to be closely scrutinised.

What happened the last time India played Pakistan?

Sunday’s match repeats the 2025 Asian Cup final, which India won by five wickets. That encounter was overshadowed by controversy after India declined to accept the trophy from Asian Cricket Council chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who also chaired Pakistan’s cricket board and served as the country’s interior minister.

Why is the match in Sri Lanka?

India and Pakistan agreed in 2024 that future matches between them would be staged at neutral venues, regardless of tournament hosts. Bangladesh’s refusal to play in India had not been sanctioned by the ICC.

Usman Tariq: Inspired by MS Dhoni

Pakistan spinner Usman Tariq once left his cricket dreams behind to work as a salesman in Dubai. His journey back to the sport was inspired by the 2016 Bollywood biopic M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, based on the life of India’s World Cup-winning captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The film’s message of perseverance convinced Tariq it was not too late to chase his ambition. Now 30, he has emerged as one of Pakistan’s key weapons heading into the revived clash.

Since his international debut three months ago, Tariq has claimed 11 wickets in four T20 internationals, including a hat-trick against Zimbabwe and a decisive 3-27 against the United States in Colombo.

Why is his bowling action controversial?

Tariq’s unusual, double-jointed bowling action — featuring a dramatic pause and slingshot release — has twice been reported but cleared by the ICC’s laboratory testing.

Questions resurfaced during the United Arab Emirates T20 League when England’s Tom Banton raised concerns, and Australia’s Cameron Green mimicked his action in a pre-World Cup series.

However, India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin publicly backed Tariq, stating he believed the action to be legal. Tariq himself remains unfazed, insisting he has been cleared twice and is confident in his technique.

Colombo sees tourism boost

The fixture has triggered a tourism surge in Colombo. Flights and hotel prices have soared, with the 35,000-capacity stadium sold out. Hotels have reportedly doubled their rates, with some rooms climbing as high as $660 per night.

According to local tourism officials, a significant portion of February’s visitors travelled specifically for the India-Pakistan clash. Sri Lanka hopes hosting high-profile neutral-venue matches will further strengthen its economic recovery and tourism sector.

Conclusion

As India and Pakistan prepare to meet once again on cricket’s biggest T20 stage, the spotlight extends far beyond the boundary ropes. Political tensions, last-minute negotiations and off-field controversies have only added to the intensity of a rivalry already watched by millions worldwide. Yet, when the first ball is bowled in Colombo, the focus will return to skill, strategy and nerve.
